Education is all about opportunity. When we take advantage of the opportunities in our lives, we experience growth and learning on new levels for our lives. In this foundational message, Pastor Ed Young begins to unpack ten powerful lessons that differentiate Fellowship Church from other churches. Through this biblical teaching and the practical lessons that accompany it, we discover how the church is the greatest classroom we could ever enter!
What’s up Fellowship Church? How’s everyone doing today? I want to say hi to all of our different campuses. We’re one church in 10 different locations. I was just told our online campus, we’re seen online in Afghanistan! Isn’t that awesome?
Well today I’m beginning a brand new series called The Classroom. I don’t want to freak anybody out by seeing those No.2 pencils and the Scantron, right? Yeah, that’s scary. Breaks me out in a cold sweat! We are going to talk about the classroom as it relates to the only thing that Jesus ever built, which is the church. We’re going to talk about the church. Our church is called Fellowship Church. That’s the name. Fellowship. Where did we get that name? Did we get it because we thought it sounded cool? No, the Bible says a church is a fellowship so it’s something that a church is and also it’s something a church does.
I want to talk to you today about 10 things but I’ll only hit five of them. The other five are next week. Ten things, 10 unique principles that make Fellowship unique. Every church is unique. Just like all of us, we’re definitely unique. I don't know if you realize that or not but God loves diversity. If you didn’t realize that just look around. We’re all different, we’re all one of a kind. Fellowship Church is a unique church. I believe we’re the greatest church in the western hemisphere. I’m just partial. Obviously you’d think I would say that and I know many of you think that as well. There are a lot of great churches out there but what makes Fellowship Church, Fellowship Church? Here’s the church, there’s the steeple. Open the doors and see all the people. I learned that as a kid and I use my digits, my fingers to do that little church and steeple and the people. We’re going to talk about 10 things that make a difference. You have your outlines and I’m going to go through and you’re going to fill the blanks in. Hopefully I’m not going to miss any blanks and if I do, well I’ll just miss them. You can watch it online and fill all the ones in that I miss.
But the first thing I want to talk to you about in Fellowship, fellowship begins with the letter F. We’re focused, we’re focused missionally. We’re focused missionally.
The mission of Fellowship Church is not something that we just grabbed out of the air. It’s not something that we thought, OK, culturally let’s do what the culture wants. Or historically, let’s try to follow in the footsteps of the early church fathers. Or let’s just do something that we think is really relevant. No, the Bible tells us the purposes of the church. And the purpose of Fellowship Church, our mission is built around two key scripture verses: the great commandment and the great commission. Say that with me. The great commandment and the great commission.
Well, what’s the great commandment? One day they asked Jesus, OK, what’s the net effect of everything you’re talking about. Here’s the great commandment. Matthew 22:37-39. Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, with all of your soul, and with all of your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it. Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Education is all about opportunity. When we take advantage of the opportunities in our lives, we experience growth and learning on new levels for our lives.
In the second message of this foundational series, Pastor Ed Young continues to unpack ten powerful lessons that differentiate Fellowship Church and help us discover the greatest lessons we could ever learn.
I thought I’d carry out my specially designed No. 2 pencil. We gave everyone a No. 2 pencil who entered Fellowship today at one of our 10 campuses. Do you have those? Let me see the pencils. Yeah! Even in Miami and London, that’s right. They’re No. 2 pencils. Even in East Texas, Downtown Fort Worth, Dallas, Park Cities. Yeah, one church, 10 locations.
ILLUS: The No. 2 pencil. You know the No. 2 pencil is still the best-selling pencil in the world? I looked it up. I was shocked. And I’m thinking to myself, why don’t they call the No. 2 pencil the No. 1 pencil, because it’s #1? Why do they call it No. 2? Because the lead in it is a specific sort of lead. It’s not too soft, you don't have to sharpen the pencil too much. It’s just right for those Scantrons, it’s just right to take notes, it’s just right to write with. I love the No. 2 pencil, I really do.
Kids, behind me you’ll see something behind me that some of you probably don't recognize, a chalkboard. We’re going to the classroom today. I’m in a series, sort of an unusual series, about the church. So I decided to give everyone No. 2 pencils and outlines. Do you have your outlines? We’re going to take some notes.
And here’s the great thing about this classroom. Everyone here will make an A+. Isn’t that great? I think fill-in-the-blank tests are from the devil but we’ve made it easier for you. So I’m going to give you the answers. Thoughts disentangle themselves when they pass through someone’s lips to your fingertips. We remember 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, like 50% of what we see and hear, 70% of what we write! So that’s why we’ve got the No. 2 pencil and that’s why we’ve got the outlines. Are you ready?
We’re talking about our church and the name of our church is what? Fellowship Church. That’s right. You can’t miss it. Fellowship. Fellowship. Well, it didn’t work. Fellowship. Fellowship is not just something that we are, it’s something that we do. Fellowship.
Here’s the church, there’s the steeple, open the doors, and see all of the fellowship, all of the people. Ten fingers make this thing happen and I’ve been talking about the 10 things that make the Fellowship difference. I’m biased. I think Fellowship Church is the greatest church in the western hemisphere. I think everyone should join Fellowship but there are other great churches around. If you are a member of another Bible-teaching church make sure you stay there. But if you’re not a member of Fellowship you need to join Fellowship Church and you can do that today.
F-E-L-L-O-W-S-H-I-P, the Fellowship Difference. And last time we talked about it. Let me put them up on the side screen. F stands for we’re focused missionally. You can go to Fellowship online and I’ll unpack all of this. E, we’re engaged creatively. We’re made in the image of our creative Creator, thus we should create. L, we love radically. We’ve never locked eyes with someone who does not matter to God. Also, L, we learn enthusiastically. I love that word enthusiasm. En theos, it means in God. O, we’re organized simply. We’re organized simply. Well, today we’re going to finish up the letters of Fellowship. We’re talking about the W-ship!
It’s been said that the key to a successful life is a good education. But the most valuable lessons we learn in life aren’t necessarily found in a classroom. In fact, the greatest opportunity to learn is available to everyone, no matter what age and stage of life we are in.
In this series, Pastor Ed Young unpacks some crucial lessons straight from the Bible that not only engage our minds, they activate our souls. And when we take these lessons to heart and discover the education God has in store for us, we experience opportunity and potential like we never dreamed possible!
